This can be applicable at any discipline which will help the students to gain more knowledge about a specific design. The teacher can utilize a jig-saw model approach for this teaching as well. The entire classroom can be divided into five groups with different topics given individually. The teacher can ask the students to research on specific topics on their own; therefore share with the other students with same approach. They can also come back to their previous group and share their learning and findings. Therefore, the students can be given multiple choice questions on their subjects that will help the teacher to review their knowledge. Communication Frey and Palmer (2017) has stated that the changing strategies and roles of utilizing the computer and information technology within the classroom are supported by the new trend of learning and teaching at the secondary level. The classroom interactions, selected activities or the instructional activities within the classroom setting can be very helpful in this context as well. However, if the students are utilizing the multimodal resources without any proper instruction or narrative structure, they tend to become unfocused (Dannels et al. 2014). Therefore the teachers require supervising by imposing an organized structure for making the classroom activities more productive. For designing this pedagogy, the teacher must understand that the communication between teacher and students is a two-way process. The communication should be interactive and the students should be valued in the communication. After entering the classroom, the teacher will divide the students in small groups of two to three students. Each of the group will have to do a double entry journal. After they are done with their journals,economics can collaborate and communicate their ideas with the teacher and the rest of the class. The students will be given access to the computers and internet if they want to search for any information. Each of the team will be given a topic, therefore on one side of the journal, the students have to write the information they get on the topic. On the other side they have to write whatever they think about the information. This pedagogy can be very effective for literature learning, where the students will be given a piece of reading and a question and th ey have to search for information. After the journal entry is done, the students will communicate their concepts and information. Here the teacher can put more valuable information. The most effective part of this pedagogy is that the students can communicate with each other with their ideas and help each other with information. At the end, the teacher will also take part in the communication process and help them to learn. Figure: Classroom Communication Digital Literacy The Australian MCEECDYA report has stated three kinds of digital literacy: creation and sharing the information, working with the information and using the information and communication technology in a responsible way (Lankshear and Knobel 2015). Later six procedures have been included in the digital literacy such as availing, managing and examining information, creation of new understanding, conversing with others utilizing the information and communication technology etc. The digital pedagogy involves a drastic change in the traditional pedagogy with a constructivist approach where the students can create their own knowledge (Tyner 2014). For this pedagogy, the teacher will use a teaching approach utilizing the digital story telling with the help of power point presentation and recorded voice. This electronic story books can be very much effective in increasing the motivation of the students. The teacher can use YouTube videos or create a presentation for the students as well. The video should be of minimum four to five minutes. After the video ends, the teacher will propose few questions regarding the topic. The students will participate in the discussion and share their thoughts and ideas with the class. This will improve their ability of accessing and evaluating the information along with creating new understanding. Figure: Digital Literacy Critical Thinking and problem solving Critical thinking is an intellectually restricted procedure which helps the individual in conceptualizing, analyzing and evaluating the information in a more active and skillful way. In other words, it can also be said that it is a kind of thinking which has the ability of assessing itself. Critical thinkers tend to raise important issues and questions, tend to formulate them more clearly (Kong 2015). This thinking procedure is a vital skill, especially within the workplace. Critical thinking can be utilized for evaluating policies, people and the other institutions which can solve many social problems. Therefore the teachers should trigger the critical thinking through the classroom activities. The following pedagogy has been designed based on the 5 step model for moving the students towards critical thinking. The teacher will give an online game to the students. The entire lesson will be based on the Quandary game where the players need to make tough decisions which may not have any clear wrong or right answers; however each of the answer has its own consequences. Therefore this game will require several concepts and skills that can be achieved by the critical thinking. Here the teacher will tell the students about the game and ask what they think just by hearing the name. Then the teacher will play the introductory video of the game so that the students are introduced with the primary objective of the game and the teacher will clear the meaning about the name of the game. The teacher will make groups of students consisting of three or four students and start playing the game. The students will be allowed for 15 minutes to play each of the episodes. If any group of students finishes the game within the time, they can replay the episode and see how things would turn out if they make any ot her choice. After this playing time, the teacher will bring all the students back to the class and ask questions regarding the game. Some sample questions would be like Why do you choose the solution? What is the basic difference between an opinion, a fact and the solution? What are the possible dilemmas while playing the game? How did you overcome it? And so on. They can also be asked to write down the key concepts about the game. The teacher can assess the learning of the students by reflecting on their writing about the key concepts. This activity will make the students think more profoundly regarding the concepts used in the game and it will also improve their problem solving skills. Later, when the students will be done with minimum of three episodes of the game, the teacher can discuss the game on the whiteboard through a introductory session. Each of the step of the game can be facilitated through discussion. Figure: Critical Thinking and problem solving Self-management Most of the times, the teachers tend to experience that the students are having trouble with finishing their homework as they are not dedicating much time in studies. It is possible that they are wasting a long time in playing or surfing the social media sites or watching television. The self management pedagogies will help the students to understand the importance of the realistic schedule (Ladson-Billings 2014). Therefore it will also make them utilize their time so that they can make time for their studies even after playing. The teacher will provide them computers where they will use the excel sheet. Through this activity, the students will also learn the usage of excel along with making their daily schedule. The teacher will divide the entire classroom in groups of maximum of three or four students. Each of the team will use one computer. The teacher will give them the first ten minutes to identify what are the important works they have in one week. As this is a group work, one student can use the computer and the others can direct him or her exactly what has to be written. After making the list, the teacher should help the students to categorize the activities. They can divide the activities in different categories such as static time frame and the flexible time frame. They can also differentiate between the most important works and the ones which cannot be rescheduled. After this stage, the teacher can do the entire work on the blackboard for showing the difference between the activities and how the students should distinguish their work timings. Later the teacher can also ask questions such as How important is this task? Do you think you can finish this task within this time? etc. In making this schedule the teacher should leave sufficient time for the personal work as well. This will help the students to learn self management through the lesson. Figure: Self management Conclusion Designing the pedagogies for students can be very tricky sometimes, as this requires a sharp creative thinking. While enacting the narrative pedagogy, it accompanies the existing traditional educational approaches along with the new and innovative thinking approaches. In such pedagogies the new potential for teaching tends to emerge along with previous ones. In such pedagogies, the students are mostly inadvertently led to the belief that they are in a system which can offer them a safe practice. The creative thinking helps the students to think in a more empathetic way than before. The fundamental assumptions of the pedagogies provide a sense that the required information in the system are transparent and clear as they tend to experience both the theory and practical practices at the same time. The practical things are not merely the practice of the traditional knowledge; rather the practices help the students to realize that they can think on their own and their thoughts are always welcome. This pedagogies influence the students to develop their thought process as well. Here are five more pairs of words to watch for when they’re used in compound phrases. 1. Light and Dark To be light-headed and to be lighthearted are not strictly analogous one is a physical sensation, and the other refers to an emotion (though it may result in a physical response) but they are both adjectives. So, why is one (and similar compounds like light-fingered and light-footed) hyphenated and the other closed? I confess I’m in the dark. But note that compounds beginning with dark are always open (â€Å"dark days† â€Å"dark horse,† â€Å"dark matter†). Most other noun compounds beginning with light (â€Å"light meter,† â€Å"light pen†) are open, but notice light-rail, which, like a few other compound nouns (mind-set, life-form), remain stubbornly hyphenated (though the meaning of light here differs; it’s akin to the definition in the previous paragraph). When the noun light is the last element of a compound, it’s always closed: candlelight, flashlight, searchlight. 2. Mind and Brain I’m going to go out of my mind. Why is one simpleminded yet single-minded? Is it because one is a presumably perpetual state that a person so designated has little or no control over, while the other is a personality trait? But compounds beginning rather than ending with mind generally obey these rules: open in noun compounds (with the previously noted exception of mind-set and the obscure mind-healer, as well as the jargony mindshare) and hyphenated in adjectival compounds such as mind-bending and mind-boggling). Brain, meanwhile, is almost always open (â€Å"brain trust,† â€Å"brain wave†); brain-dead is a rare exception. 3. Right and Wrong Compounds employing these words for practical or moral choices are generally open (â€Å"right angle,† â€Å"wrong side†), but phrasal adjectives with prepositions (right-of-way, right-to-work) are always hyphenated. 4. Right and Left Most compounds employing right or left as directions are open (noun phrases like â€Å"left wing,† adverbial phrases such as â€Å"right away†), but the phrasal adjectives left-handed and right-handed (also adverbs) are always hyphenated. 5. Smart and Dumb By now, you know not to expect logic in idiomatic phrases it’s â€Å"smart aleck† but smart-ass (or smart-mouth). Similarly, alienation leads to disillusionment with that (verbose line) which one once believed in. Apocalypse Now directed by Francis Coppola, John Steinbeck’s Tortilla Flat and Peter Skrzynecki’s poetry all deal with these three dimensions of belonging.Belonging and acceptance is integral to the formation of one’s identity. Peter Skrzynecki’s poem 10 Mary Street illustrates the security and comfort that is a product of a sense of belonging. In this case, it is a sense of belonging to a family routine that occurs daily at number 10 Mary Street. The mundanity of the routine provides stability and familiarity. The poet mourns the passing of his childhood and the destruction of the home in which he learnt the nature of growing up caught between two cultures and the rift b etween the past and the future. This notion is further explored in Apocalypse Now.Colonel Kurtz was the pride of the American Military Command. Having broken from the decrepit and corrupt school of thought that was the US army, Kurtz establishes his god-like rule over a clan of like-minded natives in the jungles of Cambodia. His character extrapolates all issues surrounding America as a nation, from war crimes to environmental stability. In one of the most compelling scenes of the film, Kurtz expresses his thoughts to Willard, one of the first Americans he has encountered since his dissent. He speaks of his son at home and his fear that if he were to be killed, his son would not understand his father’s actions.At this point, the extended close up shot of Kurtz’s face, half shrouded in darkness, changes slightly as he moves further into the light. This conveys that Kurtz still holds onto the hope that his son will one day come to understand his identity and why he acted in the way that he did. Skrzynecki delineates the sense of alienation that the migrants have towards the rest of Australia. The â€Å"sealed off highway† demonstrates the separation they feel from the rest of the country.The simile of â€Å"rose and fell like a finger† demonstrates that they do not feel welcomed or accepted in their new land, but are constantly reprimanded , like a naughty child. The line â€Å"needing its sanction† demonstrates how the migrants are enslaved to the entrapment they feel in the hostel. They need permission to continue living in a manner that doesn’t reflect their culture or beliefs. This alienation from their culture and freedom renders each migrant unimportant and attempts to destroy their sense of personal identity and belonging. However, it is because of this alienation that they achieve a sense of belonging and identity.Nationalities ‘found each other’ based on their accents and the town they came from. Inside the hostel, they keep the memory of their home and culture alive though they are haunted by the â€Å"memories of hunger and hate† that destroyed their countries. Skrzynecki uses the simile â€Å"like a homing pigeon† to connote the strong sense of survival and solidarity shared by the migrants. The homing pigeon is a survivor that travels great distances. Skrzynecki us es a reoccurring motif of birds throughout this poem as they have connotations of freedom and migration.This dimension of belonging is further explored in John Steinbeck’s novel Tortilla Flat. Danny, Pilon, Jesus Maria, Pablo, Pirate and Big Joe Portagee are half Spanish- Mexican, misfits who form a brotherhood of drunken antics that centre around the home they all share in Tortilla Flat in California. The book is written in an entirely episodic fashion to fit with the allegory that Steinbeck creates, comparing the six men to King Arthur’s Knights of the Round Table. However, instead of knights in shining armour, they are the unruly and boisterous men upon whom the community of Monterey frown upon.Therefore Steinbeck creates a paradox within this novel because whilst this brotherhood is the only place that the men find a sense of belonging, it is also their association with each other that renders them unacceptable to normal society. Steinbeck quite obviously uses the technique of having his characters speak in language befitting the Elizabethan era. This reinforces the notion that they are all fallen from the grace of a former life not mentioned in the novel, but they are fallen together. It is also a distinguishable way from separating the adopted brothers from those in normal society.It heightens not only the sense of unreality that permeates the whole book but also the sense of alienation from the outside world. The brothers eat, drink wine, sleep and occasionally venture out to do good deeds for those around them. They live by an entirely alternative concept of time, space, possession and love. The growing sense of belonging that develops through the novel is conveyed through the slow gathering of the six men to form the brotherhood and the corresponding rising action. Once they are all convened under a banner of bemused freedom, Danny states, â€Å"we are now as one, as never such men have been before. Each member is crucial to the groupâ €™s dynamic and therefore to each individual member’s sense of belonging. This is conveyed at the conclusion of the novel when, after Danny’s funeral, the house that was their home accidentally catches fire but instead of trying to save their one worldly possession, the men allow it to burn to the ground and then go their separate ways. The last words of the novel are â€Å"no two walked together† conveying that the bonds of brotherhood had been broken and that it was only with each other that they belonged.Therefore, both Migrant Hostel and Tortilla Flat effectively convey the idea that belonging is reached by a path of alienation. This scene is purposely designed to alienate the audience from the character and connotes the detrimental effect that Western civilisation is having on him. The repetitious rigmarole of a soldier’s life is communicated through the undershot of the turning fan in Willard’s room. He stares up at it from the bed, implying th at he is physically and mentally dominated by his life and routine as a soldier.As Willard travels further and further up river in search of Colonel Kurtz, he reads increasingly on Kurtz’s life and the events that have led him to the insanity that the US army now deems dangerous. Willard experiences more of the US army’s arrogance, blood-lust and drug use and becomes steadily disillusioned with the entity that he placed his faith in. Everything that is wrong with Western civilisation is represented through the arrogant Bill Kilgore who infamously states â€Å"I love the smell of Napalm in the morning. As the boat travels further up river, there is a distinct change in lighting. Before Willard boards the boat, there is a reoccurring motif of brightly coloured flares. The camera pans directly in front of the plumes of red, green and yellow smoke so that they form a veil over the scenes of battles and civilian deaths. However, once up river, the lighting becomes softer, greener and more defined. There is a distinct lack of smoke. This implies that Willard is travelling both physically and mentally away from the chaos of Western civilisation and heading deeper into Kurtz’s state of mind.Finally, Coppola uses the reoccurring motif of extreme close up shots on the faces of Willard and Kurtz. He does this to communicate that these two men are not necessarily similar but that they represent contrary facets of one human entity. The extreme close up shots of Willard and Kurtz reveal them to both be acutely serious men who have come to empathise with the same point of view. However, they are distinctly contrasted. Willard is often sweaty, dirty, constantly smoking whereas Kurtz is pristine, unchanging and aloof.This signifies that they will never be able to emulate the virtues of the other’s character that they themselves are deficient. Therefore, both In The Folk Museum and Apocalypse Now reveal themselves to be texts in which the view that alienation leads to disillusionment is explored. For humans to find where they truly belong, they must be placed outside of their comfort zone.
